The Aevo System™ will facilitate faster tooth movement and decrease orthodontically induced tooth root resorption during orthodontic treatment

EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada—SmileSonica Inc., global leader in non-invasive therapeutic ultrasound dental solutions, announced their Aevo System™ received its medical device license from Health Canada as a class II medical device. The Aevo System™ was developed to meet both patients’ and dental professionals’ main orthodontic challenge of accelerating orthodontic treatment safely. Canada joins a list of 34 countries in which the Aevo System™ is now commercially available.

Recently the Aevo System™ completed a prospective, randomized, split mouth, double-blind, controlled clinical trial across five sites in Canada. The sites and principal investigators were Dr. Tarek El-Bialy (University of Alberta, Edmonton), Dr. Terry Carlyle (Strathcona Orthodontics, Edmonton), Dr. Bryan Tompson and Dr. Kevin Knowlton (University of Toronto, Toronto), Dr. William Wiltshire (University of Manitoba, Winnipeg), and Dr. Tim Dumore (Dr. Tim Dumore and Team Orthodontics, Winnipeg).

The results of the clinical trial showed an average increase of 29.0% in tooth movement rate. In terms of root resorption, the control teeth had a root resorption rate on average of 220.8% higher than the teeth treated with the Aevo System™. The treatment showed no increase in adverse events or pain. “We feel fortunate to have the support of the orthodontic community in providing a solution that benefits both the patient and the clinic,” says Darryl Lesiuk, VP Corporate Development at SmileSonica Inc.

“It has taken eight years to arrive at this critical milestone. When I started the company it was just me, my laptop and a dream to create something for the world that is so simple that anyone could use it,” says Cristian Scurtescu, founder and CEO of SmileSonica Inc. “Now, with the support of our Alberta innovation partners and our private investors, who are all from Edmonton and area, we have grown to a global company based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.”

In a recent study, over 89% of orthodontic patients surveyed wished they could reduce the length of their orthodontic treatment. The Aevo System™ is clinically proven to enhance the physiological processes associated with orthodontic treatment. Regular use of the Aevo System™ during orthodontic treatment will facilitate faster tooth movement and decrease orthodontically induced tooth root resorption.

The Aevo System™ provides low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) to a patient’s dental area for 20 minutes per day for the duration of the orthodontic treatment. Complementary to orthodontic braces (including wire braces and clear aligners), the Aevo System™ is battery powered, portable, and intended for home use.
